-Changes in the 4.0v2 FileMaker Web Companion Public Beta

Requirements:

In order to install and use the FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v2 Public Beta, you must be licensed to use FileMaker Pro 4.0v1. The FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v2 Public Beta is not certified to work with any other version of FileMaker Pro.

System Requirements are the same as for FileMaker Pro 4.0v1.

On the Macintosh, it is recommended that you increase the amount of RAM available to FileMaker Pro if it will be used primarily as a Web server. This will ensure better performance. To increase the amount of RAM available to FileMaker Pro on the Macintosh:

1.Select the FileMaker Pro application.

2.Choose Get Info from the File menu.

3.Increase the amount specified in the Preferred Size section of the Memory Requirements to 8192 K. If you are serving particularly large databases or making extensive use of QuickTime movies, you should increase the Preferred Size even more.

Installation

1.If FileMaker Pro is running, quit the application.

2.Remove the file "Web Companion" from the "FileMaker Extensions" folder within your FileMaker Pro 4.0 folder. You may wish to keep this file so that you can revert back to the FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v1. This file must not, however, remain in the FileMaker Extensions folder.

3.Place the new file "Web Companion" in the FileMaker Extensions folder within your FileMaker Pro 4.0 folder. This file is the new FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v2 Public Beta.

4.Verify that the FileMaker Web Companion is enabled before attempting to access any database via the Web. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences. From the Preferences submenu, choose Application. In the Application Preferences dialog, choose Plug-ins from the pop-up menu. Be sure the checkbox in front of FileMaker Web Companion is checked.

Identifying the 4.0v2 FileMaker Web Companion Public Beta

Once you have installed the FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v2 Public Beta, you may want to later verify the version that you are running. This may be particularly important if you have multiple installations of FileMaker Pro.

1.Select the "Web Companion" by single clicking the Web Companion icon which can be found in the "FileMaker Extensions" folder within your FileMaker Pro 4.0 folder.

2.Chose Get Info from the File menu. The Version of the FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v2 Public Beta should read:

(4/21/98) © FileMaker, Inc.
The File Version of the FileMaker Pro Web Companion 4.0v1 should read:
Web Companion 4.0v1
(9/14/97) © Claris Corp.

Changes in the FileMaker 4.0v2 Web Companion Public Beta

The FileMaker Pro 4.0v2 Web Companion Public Beta was released primarily to address a problem which can occur occasionally after a period of high traffic. In some cases, the FileMaker Web Companion would stop answering requests. In addition, the following problems have also been addressed:

Clicking the Home button in Instant Web Publishing when using a custom home page now goes to the custom home page.

You can now access a default page in a subdirectory without entering a trailing slash (/). In version 4.0v1, entering "http://ip.address/folder_name" would return an error message.

AOL version 3.1 browser users can now access hosted Web databases with Web security enabled.

The FileMaker Web Companion now properly supports links to Adobe Acrobat .pdf files.

Several CDML replacement tags have been improved for more consistent results.

Several changes have been made to improve support for special filenames and relative directory locations.

The FileMaker Web Companion correctly sorts by a field's value list when -SortOrder=custom is used.

URLs produced by the FMP-Link tag now work consistently.

The [FMP-Image] tag now returns the correct URL when used with related fields ([FMPImage:Relationship_name::field_name]).
